If you’re in a cash crunch, choosing to buy a reconditioned refrigerator is a great way to save money while still getting a quality appliance. But what good is a fridge if you can’t fit it into the space you allocated for it?
Here are some guidelines on how to make sure the used fridge you are buying is the right fit for your kitchen:
Take measurements Before you go shopping, measure the width, depth and height of the area where the appliance will go. While looking at potential fridges, measure them and choose one that gives you about an inch of clearance at the top and on both sides. Also consider the door swing radius: ensure that there is enough room for you to fully open the door when the fridge is in its new home.
Consider the doors Look at the refrigerator’s door. Does it open from the left to the right and have hinges on the right side, or is it set up the opposite way? Choose a fridge with a door that opens toward your range, counter or workspace. Otherwise, you will always have to walk around the open door to put whatever you just got out of the fridge onto the counter. Some refrigerators have a reversible door, which means you could change a right-hand-opening door into a left-hand-opening one – but don’t count on this being possible for every fridge you look at.
Can you get it into the house? There’s nothing worse than getting a fridge home, only to realize you can’t fit it through your door. Measure the entry point to your house and any other doorways leading into the kitchen. If your entrance ways aren’t big enough, you’ll have to remove the fridge doors first, so measure the depth of the fridge without the doors just to be sure you can fit it in that way.
